It's an unspoken consensus that the festive season is usually one of the best times to either pop 'The Question', or to tie the proverbial knot in holy matrimony. With the old adage of "a new year, a new start" stuck on repeat, it's a great time to make your undying love for your partner official - although this step is only the tip of the iceberg; after the stress and careful planning of the proposal, the real fun begins with the actual wedding plans.
Depending on what the budget might be (guys, admit it: women long for that dream wedding), it becomes a frantic dance of arranging the guest list, the perfect venue, sorting out the décor... it's a long and intensive list, which is why many will instead opt for a dedicated wedding planner to pull the Big Day together flawlessly. On top of that long list though, has to be the wedding dress - and while the gents will have to (im)patiently wait until their beloved bride walks down the aisle before witnessing her in all her glory and splendour, in the ensuing months and weeks prior to that the bridal party will most likely spend many hours in giggles and hushed tones as the search for the perfect wedding dress continues.
On the other end of the scale though (on the side that screams "envy"), there are celebs who are clearly by the means to invest bucket loads of cash on their special day; and especially on the wedding dress, which more often than not will be commissioned to a famous designer - and the price tags on these items are pretty steep! The saying goes, "If you've got it, flaunt it"; so we can't really blame the owners of these most expensive wedding dresses - so let's check them out!
- MARCHESA DRESS - NICOLE RICHIE - R233,500
Let's start off by just dipping our toes into the pool of excess and opulence before diving all in - and first up in our list, we have the beautiful dress worn by Lionel Richie's daughter (and one-time partner in crime to Paris Hilton), Nicole Richie.
When she got married to rock star Joel Madden in 2010, in true socialite style Richie wore no less than three wedding dresses - although as the main ceremony dress this particular one tipped the scales at nearly a quarter of a million rand (at the current exchange rate). It's classic yet revealing at the same time, and was designed by Marchesa - with the inspiration being gained from Princess Grace Kelly. As a lovely personal touch, the names of the bridal couple were embroidered into the lace on the sleeves; and rumour has it that the bottom half of the dress alone used more than 90 meters of silk organza tulle which was intricately shaped into gorgeous petals. It's definitely a hefty price tag - easily the entire budget for an elaborate wedding on our South African shores - but it's still the cheapest wedding dress on our list; so let's delve in a bit deeper shall we?
- VERA WANG DRESS - VICTORIA BECKHAM - R1.1 MILLION
We weren't joking when we said that the price tags were pretty steep; and as our second offering, we're already into the million rand range! Vera Wang is a hugely popular designer amongst celebs, with many of her previous designs stealing the show at weddings all over the world. For Posh Spice, aka Victoria Beckham, it was no different:
Staying true to her Spice Girls name gifted upon her, Posh Spice certainly didn't hesitate to whip out the cheque book; sparing no expense in her quest for her perfect wedding dress. When she tied the knot to soccer legend David Beckham way back in 1999, she opted to go for the timeless classic look; which her purpose-designed structured ball-gown has managed to pull off seamlessly (no pun intended). Victoria Beckham might have a reputation of often clearing out her wardrobes and putting the unwanted clothing up for auction - with the proceeds being donated to charity - but this Vera Wang creation has become the exception to the rule. Perhaps the Beckhams are hoping that their daughter, Harper, might one day wear the same dress in the future? Only time will tell!
Are you ready to dive all-in into our pool of excess, luxury and opulence? You might want to be seated before taking a look at this next price tag - but then again; if it's a member of the Kardashian clan that's being betrothed, we wouldn't really expect anything else - right?
- GIVENCHY DRESS - KIM KARDASHIAN - R4.6 MILLION
You might think that forking out nearly R5 million for a wedding dress is borderline lunacy; but this Givenchy creation still doesn't rank as the most expensive out there! Despite this though, it is still incredibly expensive - but is the price tag justified?
Then again, thanks to an estimated personal net worth of nearly R760 million, we somehow doubt that Kim Kardashian had no issues with settling the bill before taking delivery. The dress was worn on the day she tied the knot with rapper Kanye West, with the inspiration drawn from Princess Kate's wedding dress. This elegantly-designed lace creation appeals to the more conservative bride; although Kim pulled it off in a way that only she knows how to. It has a sheer back, and even comes with a gorgeous train and even longer train courtesy of the full-length veil. She definitely looked the part of the glowing bride on the day thanks to this beautiful dress!
- VERA WANG DRESS - R17.5 MILLION
Unique? Gorgeous? Outrageous? It's completely open to interpretation, although one fact cannot be denied: it is sinfully expensive at R17.5 million! Vera Wang, a name which popped up earlier, is responsible for this - let's be honest - work of art:
Obviously it's not exactly a "traditional" wedding dress, but would make for a great one-of-a-kind and memorable wedding - for those who can afford to spend nearly R20 million and not think twice about it. The dress was designed back in 2009; and while the rumour mill can't always be relied on, it was said that the dress had been designed and destined for Jennifer Lopez. If this was indeed the case, it would have been for her wedding to Ben Affleck - and as we all know, that never happened. In honour of the year the dress was designed, there are a total of 2009 peacock feathers adorning the material. Curiously enough, apparently only male peacock feathers were used; as the females' feathers were deemed as not good enough for the project by Wang. If it's a wedding with a difference that you're after, there's not much chance of you going wrong with this dress.
You might think that the peacock dress - or any of these other dresses, for that matter - is way beyond your wedding budget; but have you ever considered one of the best options available exclusively to South Africans?
