Undefeated world champion Floyd Mayweather has uncharacteristically decided to relent on his decision of wearing 10 ounce gloves for the boxing match between him and UFC fighter Conor McGregor and has decided to go with 8 ounce boxing gloves instead. Having to wear 10 ounce boxing gloves was McGregor’s biggest challenge. As a UFC fighter, McGregor is used to 4 ounce padding, so the boxing gloves that were supposed to be 6 ounces more presented quite an obstacle for him. Now, however, Mayweather has told McGregor to forget about the 10 ounce gloves, and go for 8 ounces instead.
This is an unusual move for the boxer as he is planning to take his 49-0 record in the boxing ring to 50-0. Perhaps it has something to do with McGregor telling the public that Mayweather had put restrictions on the rules governing which gloves get used for the fight. Last week Tuesday, Mayweather responded to the accusations saying: “Don't believe what you hear in the media. Don't believe what you hear on blog sites. If it's not coming directly from me, then it's not true. I'm telling McGregor, "Let's fight in 8 oz gloves". McGregor can fight in any brand he prefers or chooses. I'll be wearing 8 oz Grant gloves. Whatever advantage McGregor needs to feel more comfortable in the ring, I'm willing to accommodate. Let's give the boxing and MMA fans what they want to see.”
However, Mayweather Promotions has inquired about having the new 8 ounce glove size – instead of the 10 ounces required by the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) – contested. McGregor posted on Instagram that he could care less about the weight of the gloves: “Another handy 12 rounds today. We are prepared to destroy Floyd. Pick whatever size gloves you want as well little man. I fight with 4oz. I don't give a fuck about the size of the glove. I am coming sprinting at you with bricks. Know that. Brittle hands.”
