Paedspal Paediatric Palliative Care - selected by Ryan O'Connor from Kfm.
PPC are located in the Rondebosch Medical Centre, the first of its kind in the Western Cape. The facility provides care and support to children living with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses. They aim to improve the quality of life by anticipating, preventing and treating suffering.
Paedspal Palliative Care is a new approach to care for children with life-limiting conditions by managing physical, psychological, emotional and existential suffering.
Doctor Michelle Mering is the director of the program and pediatrician with specialised interest in Palliative Care and chronic pain management in children. According to Doctor Mering, "We work not only on treatment of pain and medical aspects but also the psychological and emotional support that is required on a very difficult journey".
Children with complicated medical problems such as heart defects, severe seizure disorders or cancer, including depression and anxiety, need specialized care over their lifetime.
Pending legislation will help to educate and inform patients to better understand the benefits of Palliative Care. Studies in China have shown that PPC may improve outcomes and help to extend life as well as improve wellbeing and family relationships.
In addition, a recent study published in Palliative medicine shows that the need for PPC will double by 2040. Therefore, more quality PPC services, tools, training, facilities, and technical assistance is needed, along with trained healthcare providers - offering the best care with the best possible outcomes!
