The South African Primary Education Support Initiative (SAPESI) is a non-profit organisation that aims to improve literacy and numeracy in primary schools in rural areas of South Africa. It imports second-hand mobile libraries from Japan, these are in the form of buses, which are donated to the provincial Departments of Education.

SAPESI believe that children should be encouraged to read, as books and reading improve literacy. However, many schools in disadvantaged areas do not have library facilities and this initiative closes the gap by providing a mobile library service that is organised by professional librarians. The need for such a service is vital in order to become literate and independent lifelong learners and readers, applying to both children and teachers.

SAPESI, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education, has already set-up 43 mobile libraries, around 510 schools, in 9 provinces in South Africa. The aim is to donate 100 buses servicing 2500 schools by 2025. This translates to 1 mobile library per 96 education districts.

This amazing organisation has dedicated sponsors and supporters who provide financial as well as non-financial support such as vehicle maintenance, PR and marketing, the supply of books and generators etc.

SAPESI is making big strides in education, as reading is the basis of all learning!
