The USA Powerball lottery has finally been won. The prize of $688 MILLION, the fourth largest lottery in U.S. history, will be shared equally by two winners!
The winning numbers for the draw that took place on 27 October 2018 were: 8-12-13-19-27 and Powerball 4.
The two winning tickets were bought in two different extreme locations: The one was purchased at Casey's General Store in Redfield, a town of 800 people in Iowa, and the other in New York City.
"This is the biggest prize that's ever been won in Iowa, period," said Mary Neubauer, the spokesperson for Iowa Lottery, who confirmed that the store which sold the winning ticket will receive $10,000.
The ticket bought in New York City was sold at a Deli in Harlem. Carlos Diaz, the owner of West Harlem Deli, believes the winner is one of his regular customers. Mr. Diaz is very excited as it provides a good profile for his Deli.
Iowa's last big win was in June 2012, when a group of co-workers at the Quaker Oats plant, split the winnings of $241 MILLION. This shows that big winnings can occur even in small towns which means everybody stands a chance to win given the randomness of the game.
"I hope it went to a deserving person with a humble heart," said Angel Rivera, a neighborhood resident, who urged the winner to "Just do us a favor and give back to this beautiful city."
The winner has an option to either take a lump sum amount or annuity payments over 29 years. Most winners select the lump sum option. To date, the winners have not come forward to claim their prize. Winners names will be announced as soon as the prizes are claimed.
Iowa Lottery CEO, Terry Rich, said: "This goes to show what we've said many times: You never know when the next big winner will hit."
