LottoStar has contributed R200,000 towards 1000 Women 1 Voice’s Covid-19 Soup Kitchen programme, so that they can help many more women and children in need during this difficult time.

The 1000 Women 1 Voice initiative focuses on creating awareness, providing safe spaces and resources for women and girls who are victims and survivors of domestic violence, abuse and rape.

This Cape Town based NGO has been at the forefront of advancing women’s human rights since 2003. In 2004, the WHEAT Trust mobilised 1000 women to unite against domestic violence in Cape Town and raised funds that went to different women-led initiatives.

The organisation is aimed at empowering, educating and equipping women with the tools to act against gender-based violence (GBV) and supports many community projects too. A few of these community projects include their Covid-19 lockdown soup kitchen, War against Hunger, various anti-bullying initiatives as well as various trauma, GBV training initiatives and many more.

Due to the hard lockdown, many single mothers lost their jobs and are now living in dire circumstances. The 1000 Women Trust stepped up to support 45 Soup Kitchens in the Western Cape, which were all established by their stakeholders. The soup kitchens provide food to over 20,000 people daily, and the organisation is working towards making them sustainable for the coming future whilst still providing support and funding to survivors of GBV.

With this contribution, LottoStar would like to ensure that the 1000 Women 1 Voice organisation continues to do the amazing work that they are currently doing in providing meals to those in need, support for GBV survivors and in their continuous fight against the escalated GBV in our country.

Update: 01 July

When the president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, announced lockdown in the country, 1000 Women 1 Voice took the initiative to launch the ‘Isolated but not alone’ project with the help of its partners. The project focuses on offering telephonic support to abused women who are feeling sad, experiencing trauma, facing a crisis, anxious, exhausted, and irritated. A total of 5000 women participated in the project. 45 support groups under 1000 Women also started soup kitchens for those in need.

LottoStar is proud to have partnered with 1000 Women 1 Voice and help fight gender-based violence against women and children.
