There are a few things that can humble us as South Africans like pulling up to a garage, asking the petrol attendant to fill up and watching the numbers climb. Suddenly, that quick stop becomes a full-on financial meeting in your mind. And lately? The petrol price has been doing the absolute most.

With the latest fuel price hike pushing 95 petrol to R30,25 per litre, filling up has become a more expensive part of our everyday lives. Whether you’re commuting to work, on school runs or heading out for on a weekend adventure, the cost of getting from A to B is hard to ignore.

Remember when you could take the scenic route just because you felt like it? Or agree to a quick catch-up with your friends or family without calculating the distance first?

These days, every trip can feel like it deserves its own budget meeting. That spontaneous drive to see your people might need a second thought while the weekly commute is looking less like a routine and more like a long-term investment.

Of course, we can’t control international oil prices or make the petrol pump a little kinder but we can still find ways to enjoy our downtime, have a little fun and make room for entertainment that fits our budgets.

Petrol Prices Are Taking Us for a Wild Ride

Picture yourself sitting on your couch and you decide to place a bet on

ScratchCard game - just for the fun of it. As you continue to scratch, your heart suddenly skips a beat. R75 Million is yours. What now?! Many emotions and thoughts are running through your mind – it’s a lot. Let’s explore the psychological stages that many people experience.

In most cases, disbelief reigns supreme! This is the “pinch me, I must be dreaming” phase, refreshing the website to check your account balance, staring at the number and screenshotting it, etc. Psychologically, these types of reactions cause the brain's protective mechanism to do exactly what it was built to do – protect us from shock.

Psychologists call it "emotional dampening", where the mind's instinct is to slow down a stimulus that's too large to process immediately.

At some point, the silence breaks and this kind of news can't be handled alone. Choosing who to tell first is a big deal. Sometimes the first call isn't usually the most "logical" one such as calling your financial advisor or lawyer. It's the person who is most emotionally central to your life in that moment. For many people, that's their mom or dad, their significant other or their best friends. This stage highlights our desire for validation, as well as a need for guidance in navigating the new reality or way forward. Who do you think you would call first?

Now this is where the excitement can lead to spontaneous decisions and actions. For some, they buy cars. For others it's their dream home. For many South Africans it's paying off debt or someone else's before their own and this could be a parent, a sibling, a friend who's been struggling financially. The psychology behind this stage is the brain’s reward system that’s firing on all cylinders, releasing dopamine in response to the massive win. The brain always needs a proxy, and it finds one very fast.

Eventually - sometimes days or weeks later the logical brain takes a step in.

This is the stage where lists get made, calls to lawyers and accountants happen, conversations about "what does this actually mean for my life" happen and honestly, there’s no universal "right" answer to what someone does with a life-changing win. Some people move, some don't move at all. Others tell everyone or tell almost no one, quit their jobs the next day or keep going to work because it turns out the routine matters to them more than they realised.

There's no right answer. That's the whole point. The psychology of a win that big isn't about the money itself but it's about who you are when the external pressure lifts and you suddenly have room to think.

Through it all, the experience is a reminder of life's unpredictability and the reactions we possess in the face of life-changing events. Whether it’s an impulsive splurge or a carefully crafted plan, each step is valid in its own right.

LottoStar could be the start of a chain reaction, unlocking doors to dreams that have been long held in the heart – and that could all start with just one bet.

You’ve Just Won R75 Million. What's Your First Move?

We all have our thing – maybe it’s always choosing the same number or claiming the same seat every time. Maybe it’s a lucky item of clothing for big moments, or a song you listen to before an important moment. For some, it’s simpler – spotting a certain number and reading it as a sign that their luck is about to turn.

Some people call it superstition, and others call it having a system. Either way, humans have been creating lucky rituals for as long as we’ve been trying to make sense of uncertainty.

Think about the little routines we develop around our everyday life. We knock on wood, cross our fingers, avoid certain numbers and attach meaning to dates that are important to us. When something feels uncertain, having a familiar ritual can give us a sense of control and comfort and when it comes to games of chance, those rituals can become even more interesting.

Your lucky number might be your birthday, your anniversary or a number that has appeared in a memorable moment in your life. Your lucky colour might be one you associate with a particular good day. Even a favourite song can become part of your routine simply because it puts you in the right mood.

Then there are the more personal rituals. The person who always taps the screen three times before spinning the slots, chooses the same betting amount every time or those who chant a mantra out loud.

In reality, there’s an important difference between having a lucky ritual and actually having a formula for an uncertain outcome. Part of the fun is the personal connection we create with the experience. Maybe that’s why we love lucky rituals so much because they give uncertainty a little personality.

What’s your winning ritual? Do you have a number you always return to? A favourite LottoStar game? A lucky day? Or are you more of a “let’s see what happens” person?

Take a shot on over 800 games for a chance to win instant payouts of up to R75 Million at Your World of Live Games.

The Psychology of Lucky Rituals

You know how some moments are planned and some just randomly happen unexpectedly? You can prepare, practise, strategise and wait for your chance but when the moment arrives, there’s only one thing left to do – to step up.

South Africa got a reminder of that last week, when Banyana Banyana secured a hard-fought 2-1 win to keep their World Cup hopes alive. And standing tall when it mattered most was goalkeeper Kaylin Swart, who earned Woman of the Match honours after an exceptional performance between the goalposts.

This was more than a football moment. It was a very South African one - where you get the feeling of watching someone rise after they’ve fallen, take centre stage and own it while you collectively hold your breath, shouting at the screen and celebrating with every South African.

Women’s Month celebrates the women who’ve broken barriers and made space for themselves and others but it’s just as much about the everyday moments. It’s about the woman who backs herself when no one else does, who takes the lead and who tries again after a setback.

Kaylin Swart’s performance is a great example. When the pressure was on, there was no time to wonder if she was ready. She had to be, and she was – save after save. That’s what being in the moment looks like.

Isn’t that what makes a great experience memorable? The anticipation before something happens, just like how you feel before placing your bet on your favourite LottoStar games.

, every game brings its own moments of anticipation, excitement and unexpected turns. Sometimes it’s less about what’s coming next and more about being there for what you’re doing in the moment. You just never know when an ordinary moment is going to become THEE moment.

Maybe that’s the real lesson from Banyana’s latest win. You don’t always get to choose when your moment arrives but you seize it when it does. Back yourself, take the opportunity at a chance for something big, such as betting on over 800 games for a chance to win instant payouts of up to R75 Million.

That’s the kind of spirit that shows us that RSA is really our DNA.

Monday rolls around and the countdown to Friday begins. Most people are just enduring the week – getting through it, ticking each day off and waiting for the weekend to finally arrive. But what if Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were worth getting excited about?

does. Three nights a week, three different tournaments and three chances to win your share of payouts that could have your wallet sorted. Your week doesn’t have to be something you survive. It can be something you look forward to.

Tuesdays used to be the “forgotten” middle child of the working week and with our Red Rake Rush Tournament, it’s now the night that gets the week going.

Every Tuesday from 6-10 PM, a share of R500,000 across our Red Rake slot games is waiting to be won by 500 players, with no minimum bet required. The leaderboard updates in real time and your position is determined by your highest multiplier, not just by how much you bet.

Wednesdays are sometimes the hinge of the week and our Playtech Mystery Parcel is its most fitting event. Sometimes you’re not quite sure how things are going to go, but you’re committed to finding out.

Our Playtech Mystery Parcel Tournament runs every Wednesday from 8-10 PM. Players stand a chance to win a share of R250,000 with 240 prizes that are distributed across the night but here’s the twist: you don’t know what you’re going to win until it lands on your screen. Each prize is a surprise. Players must also place at least one qualifying spin every 30 seconds to unlock the mystery parcel. The minimum bet is R2.

We all know by Thursday, the energy shifts. The week is almost done, the weekend is close and our Reel Jackpot Race is our way of sending you into Friday properly.

That means R500,000, 500 winners and 2 thrilling hours of energy across our participating Reel Rush slot games. The minimum qualifying bet is R2. You could also check out our socials every Friday to see who came first in the race.

Across all three nights, LottoStar gives players a chance to win a share of R1,25 Million every single week. The Jackpot Arena was built around a simple idea: your week should have moments worth looking forward to. They’re all sitting in LottoStar’s Arena, waiting for you to show up. Now get in and enjoy the thrill at Your World of Live Games.

Sometimes winning the lottery happens in the most unexpected ways. A forgotten ticket tucked inside a book, a spontaneous decision to split a ticket with a stranger or luck striking not once, not twice, but three times in a single month.

Stories like these remind us that life-changing moments can happen when you least expect them. The real question is… what will your LottoStar story look like?

British girl hides her winning ticket in her bra

At just 18 years old, waitress Ianthe Fullagar scooped more than £7 Million (about R155 Million) on EuroMillions shortly after finishing her A-levels roughly equivalent to Matric (Grade 12) in South African terms.

The shock of winning such a huge amount left her completely overwhelmed. In fact, the excitement caused such a commotion at home that her dog even ended up biting her on the bottom during the chaos!

Fearing she might lose her life-changing ticket, Ianthe decided the safest place to keep it was… in her bra. Sometimes the best hiding spots are the simplest ones.

Couple finds winning ticket while helping with homework

Imagine helping your grandchild with homework and stumbling upon a forgotten C$1 Million (around R13 Million) winning ticket.

That’s exactly what happened to Nicole Pedneault and Roger Larocque from Canada. While helping their grandson with a school project about Japan, they opened an old book and discovered a lottery ticket from the 15 April 2018 draw tucked between the pages.

The couple found it in April 2019, almost a year after it had been purchased – just in time to claim the prize before it expired.

“It’s all just by chance that we found it at the last minute like that,” one of the winners said.

A couple wins the lottery three times in one month

For one couple in Virginia, luck didn’t just knock once – it practically moved in.

In March 2014, they won the lottery three times in a single month.

Their first winning ticket was purchased on the 12th, the second on the 26th, and the third on the 27th. By the end of the month, they had collected more than $2 Million (about R32 Million) in winnings.

That’s the kind of streak most players can only dream about. When Lady Luck is on your side, anything can happen.

A cop and a waitress split a ticket… and win big

What started as an unusual tip turned into a life-changing moment.

had been serving customers at the same restaurant for 24 years when regular customer and police detective Robert Cunningham offered her an unusual deal. Instead of leaving a tip, he suggested they split whatever winnings might come from the lottery ticket in his pocket.

That ticket ended up winning $6 Million (around R96 Million), and the pair each walked away with half.

The incredible story even inspired the movie

From hidden tickets to lucky streaks and unexpected deals, these stories prove that lottery wins can happen in the most surprising ways.

And who knows? Your own winning story could be just around the corner.
