At LottoStar, giving back is part of our DNA. In our 2025 edition of our May Money Madness competition with Kfm 94.5, we are proud to support Save7 – an organisation committed to raising awareness about organ donation and making it easier for South Africans to become donors.

Over 4000 South Africans are currently waiting for life-saving organ transplants. Yet, every year, countless viable organs are buried, simply because only a few people are registered as donors. In fact, less than 0,2% of the population are organ donors – a heartbreaking statistic that Save7 is working tirelessly to change.

The organisation’s name is rooted in its powerful slogan – “You can save 7 lives in just one minute”. That’s how long it takes to register as an organ donor.

After witnessing patients pass away due to a shortage of donors, Stellenbosch medical students founded Save7 to spark change. Since then, the organisation has reached over 2 million people through awareness campaigns, partnerships and incentivised sharing.

However, Save7 goes beyond raising awareness by building systems that streamline the donor-to-transplant process, including a voice-based “time capsule” that allows individuals to record their wish to become a donor, providing clear proof for their families.

Each year, Tygerberg Hospital loses up to 100 transplantable organs because of inadequate preservation facilities. To help change this, Save7 repurposed an unused hospital room into the LifePod – a cutting-edge donor ICU located beside the theatre complex. This incredible achievement was made possible thanks to the generosity of donors and supporters.

Save7 also runs support groups for patients on dialysis or awaiting transplants, ensuring they’re seen, heard and supported while they wait for their second chance at life.
