It was one of the biggest lottery prizes in US history! The search is finally over as four people who scooped the $1,3 Billion (over R19,3 Billion in South Africa) Mega Millions jackpot in January came forward to claim it.
This puts an end to the rumour mill and speculations that surrounded the mystery of who had won the third-largest jackpot in US history.
The four winners belong to the Wolverine FLL Club and have decided to receive a lump sum payment instead of annual payments – this reduces the windfall to $717,4 Million (over R10,7 Billion) after tax deductions.
According to the winners’ attorney, Kurt Panouses, “This kind of money will impact the families of our club members for generations to come."
"We plan to stay humble and pay it forward through charitable giving in southeast Michigan," continued Panouses.
According to lottery expert, Brett Jacobson, “billions of dollars go unclaimed in lottery prizes each year. Ticket holders often don't realize that they've won secondary prizes, which are issued for tickets that have some but not all of the jackpot numbers. They can range from a $1 prize for getting the correct Mega Millions number to $1 Million or more.”
According to Jacobson, there were 114 prizes worth $1 Million (over R14,9 Million) or more that were unclaimed in 2015 alone.
The winning ticket was bought at a grocery store in Novi, Detroit.
