Darren underwent extensive medical procedures, which included having his back and head held together with staples and the removal of a third of his lung due to the bullet fragments that caused it to collapse.

This harrowing experience forced Darren, once a physically fit rugby player, kickboxer, and gym enthusiast, into rehabilitation, where he had to relearn even the most basic tasks—like sitting up.

However, Darren’s resilience and unwavering faith helped him defy the odds, earning him the title of the world’s 9th Fittest Adaptive Seated Without Hip Athlete—an incredible achievement, considering he only started

The academy offers blind and visually impaired students training in cybersecurity. The faculty comprises highly skilled and specialized trainers dedicated to providing tailored education that meets the unique needs of their students. Courses range from Microsoft Office-based short courses to full-time certificate programs and an intensive two-year Cyber Security program.

LottoStar made a generous donation of R1 Million to the academy to help, support and empower the visually impaired community.

In 2019, Hein's dream to uplift and empower the blind community materialized with the founding of the Hein Wagner Academy in Worcester, Cape Town that specializies in post-graduate training for the blind and visually impaired. The need for the institution became apparent after the closure of the Department for Career Development in 2018, leaving a void that Hein passionately sought to fill.

The success of the academy is evident in the accomplishments of its graduates, with many securing positions in cybersecurity at leading organizations like Absa. These success stories underscore the academy's mission which is to transform lives through education, enabling visually impaired individuals to achieve economic independence and social connectivity.

LottoStar hopes that the donation will further assist with the running costs of the facility at the academy.

LottoStar Donates To The Visually-Impaired

LottoStar is committed to making a positive impact by supporting initiatives like 

 (SAVE), a non-profit organization dedicated to safeguarding the Vaal River and its surroundings from pollution.

Founded in the 1990s, SAVE focuses on raising awareness about pollution issues and identifying polluters within various government structures.

The Vaal River, South Africa's third-largest river, is currently facing an environmental crisis due to contamination by water lettuce, an invasive aquatic plant. This contamination renders the water unsafe for human consumption and poses a significant threat to the ecosystem. If left unchecked, the infestation could spread during floods, causing severe and lasting damage to the river's delicate balance.

To address this urgent situation, LottoStar has contributed R2 Million to prevent further infestation, averting a potential water crisis in Gauteng, which could affect over 20 million residents.

The rapid spread of water lettuce and water hyacinth in the Vaal River over the past three years highlights the urgency of the situation. In comparison, it took 50 years for Hartebeespoort Dam to experience similar issues, highlighting the scale and speed of the current crisis.

Currently, a team of 20 technicians is working tirelessly, utilizing excavators to remove the invasive plant from the river.

. This foundation has supported various causes spanning from medical, educational, community, recreational to sports projects.

Tasoulla, affectionately called Tas, highlighted The Star Foundation's recent initiative supporting 

, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing prosthetic equipment to children after amputation. Over the next 12 months, LottoStar's Star Foundation will donate R50,000 towards a prosthetic leg, every month.

Boss Babe on 702's Corporates That Care

We're back with an update! As you know, no LottoStar competition is complete without a meaningful cause.

In last year's Summer of Millions competition with 

, our generous players raised an impressive R891,000 towards 



A portion of these proceeds supported incredible causes such as Hercules Community Policing Forum, Nokuphila, Bela Bela Protection Association and Ché – a total amount of R300,000 was split among them.

Now, the remaining R561,000 will go towards:


Prudence Mahlangu, a single mother of 2, faces immense financial and emotional strain as she’s the breadwinner for her distant family. Prudence is a foster parent to Marcia, her niece (her cousin’s daughter). Marcia’s mother had pregnancy complications. As a result, her mother died 9 days after she was born. Years later, it was discovered that Marcia had cerebral palsy, requiring constant care and attention.
 

In addition to caring for Marcia and her daughter, she also takes care of her extended family including her retired father, cousins and an aunt who has mental health challenges.

Prudence found Lesedi Self Help Centre to assist with caring for Marcia, as she is fully dependent and non-verbal. However, the center is not funded by the government and depends on the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grants received by the children.

GMA and LottoStar have granted Prudence and Lesedi Self Help Centre R100,000 each. The funds will go towards alleviating Prudence’s financial stress such as paying for her eldest daughter’s school fees and helping Prudence complete her studies. It will also assist in the running of the Lesedi Self Help Centre.


Siyabonga’s Children’s Home in Germiston


In November 2023, a registered non-profit organization had to submit a comprehensive business plan to the Department of Social Services and Development to qualify for funding to sustain itself in the year 2024. However, the organization has not received any funding and communication from the government despite their submission.

Siyabonga Children’s Home looks after 41 children, ranging from 1 to 18 years old, who come from destitute and abusive backgrounds. They have witnessed a neighbouring children’s home shut down and they would hate to suffer the same fate.

In a gesture of kindness, GMA and LottoStar have donated R148,000 to the children’s home. This will go towards re-hiring retrenched social workers and cleaners, also other running costs.

Maryna van Deventer, a Pharmacist Assistant from Rustenburg, is the only breadwinner in her household which consists of her daughter and husband. She needs cataract surgery on both her eyes. Unfortunately, both the lenses of her eyes are cloudy, resulting in blurry vision.

The quote she received from a private hospital was quite steep considering she could not afford medical aid to cover the costs. To her demise, public hospitals do not have the equipment to do the surgery.

Maryna's vision problems not only affect her job but also make it difficult for her to pursue further education or training opportunities that could potentially improve her circumstances.

In a much-needed ray of hope, GMA and LottoStar donated R63,000 to Maryna.



Ruan from Tzaneen has Odontogenic Myxoma, a rare tumour of the jaw. He needs urgent surgery in order to stop the spread of the tumour into the skull and potentially affecting the brain.


Ruan’s family has endured hardship. Having lost his father a few years ago and his mother, he cannot afford medical aid nor the cost to cover surgery. They had consulted at Medunsa Hospital, however, they did not have the equipment to carry out the surgery.


With a stroke of kindness, GMA and LottoStar contributed R150,000 towards his surgery, easing the financial strain on his family.

 as their chosen charity. Located in Benoni, this organization serves as a sanctuary for children without parental care offering them shelter, protection, education and therapy.

The Break Away show, hosted by Khutso Theledi, chose 

Association for the Sensory Disabled (ASD

), an organization dedicated to caring for sensory multi-disabled children in impoverished rural communities of Worcester. They are also striving to provide accessible, sustainable and integrated services for these children’s well-being.

The Midday Link-up trio, namely Lerato Kganyago, ProVerb and Mel Bala, selected 

, an organization working to uplift and restore the dignity of schoolgirls in South Africa. Project Dignity empowers these young girls by educating them about their bodies and improving their self-esteem.

, a safe residence for children and teenagers who have survived abusive situations, mainly linked to child sex trafficking.


The funds raised from our Woza Win competition will be evenly distributed amongst all the mentioned charities, therefore R100,000 goes to each of the above mentioned organisations.

After a record-breaking radiothon in 2022, this year we had the privilege of donating a fully equipped kitchen to Sibelius High School through the 

Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA). 

The kitchen will help address the widespread issue of hunger among school children. During PSFA’s 65 years of operation, this is the 132nd kitchen provided to a school.




Thanks to our incredible players’ generosity, we were able to raise R4 Million for 

. LottoStar matched every rand donated. The funds raised will cover the annual running costs of the sanctuary. Lambano Sanctuary is an organization that assists individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. They currently have 28 children in their care. They also plan on opening a pediatric medical facility. Your contribution will help make this initiative a reality.




In 2022, LottoStar’s The Star Foundation partnered with Kfm 94.5 for a year-long campaign to fund 200 surgeries by 

- an organization that promotes inclusive cancer care in the South African public healthcare system. Over the past year, we have empowered 200 women across the Western Cape and Eastern Cape by providing life-changing breast cancer surgeries for those who have been on the waiting list for at least a year. Over R1,2 Million was donated to Project Flamingo.

, a heartfelt initiative hosted by Martin Bester. The segment of the show assisted several recipients such as the Hercules Community Policing Forum, a woman in need of a wheelchair, the Bela Bela Protection Association and a lady who was involved in a motorbike accident.

As the show gives constants a chance to win up to R250,00 in cash prizes, it also served as a platform for giving back where a total of R716 759 was raised by celebrity contestants who battled it out to win money for causes close to their hearts. We experienced history in the making when celebrities such as Zahara and Lebogang Tlokwana won R250,000 for causes close to their hearts.

 – an organization that promotes early childhood development in disadvantaged communities in Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Eastern Cape provinces. Over R400,000 was raised for the organization.




The Star Foundation launched a five-year in-school breakfast program in collaboration with

. The program will benefit at least 7,555 learners across eight schools in the Ehlanzheni District of Hazyview. Beyond providing a nutritious breakfast, the initiative aims to provide training and internships as part of community development.

LottoStar Charity Highlights: A Year of Giving 2023

Five South African celebs took to the hot seat on Deal or No Deal, airing on SABC channels 1 and 2 with Katlego Maboe as the host.

Like any other contestant, the celebs could have won anything between R1 and R250,000. However, all their winnings went to their chosen charities.

Kicking off the special celeb week was reality star, Lasizwe Dambuza, who won R28,500 for 

 — a foundation dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children facing life-changing illnesses.

Next up was DJ Lamiez Holworthy, who played for Seitebogo Peta Cleft Palate Foundation and won R40,000 which will go towards repairing cleft palates in children born with cleft lips to boost their confidence.

Culinary queen, Siba Mtongwana made an appearance and banked R30,000 for 

 – a multipurpose centre for children infected and affected by AIDS in Nyanga, Cape Town.

Selby Selbeyonce Mkhize made an appearance in pursuit of raising funds for the 

, an organization that takes care of the elderly, orphans, and sick people. Selby won R100,000 on their behalf.

Kfm’s Sibongile Mafu wrapped up the week and won R4,700 for 

which is an organization that aims to restore dignity in the lives of homeless and underprivileged women by providing them with basic healthcare, sanitation and menstrual materials.
