It is not easy for many families, as they are unable to afford the medical treatments that their children need. State Hospitals are at full capacity and there’s not enough space.

To add to the already stretched healthcare system, Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, unfortunately, caught fire in April 2021, resulting in hospitals in the surrounding areas having to take on more pressure. One of those hospitals being the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.

On average, the cost of care for a patient is R30,000 at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital. That includes a care package that consists of PJs, slippers, toiletries, toys (books, puzzles, crayons, and colouring books).

The day-to-day running’s of Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital are mostly privately funded. It also serves as a referral hospital for patients that cannot be assisted by state hospitals. Funds need to be raised to help more patients.

LottoStar’s donation of R67,000 will provide two surgeries for children in need at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.

1.What was your first reaction when you realised you won over R1 Million in our Crazy Time?

I was shocked, I didn’t think it was real. I tried to watch the video afterwards. The thought that I won did not register at that moment.

2.Who was the first person you shared the exciting news with and what was their reaction?

I haven’t told anyone as yet. Once I have come to terms with it, I’ll share the news with my family.

3.What made you place a bet on Crazy Time?

I was playing for a while and I didn’t expect to win.

4.Do you know what you will be doing with your winnings?

No idea as yet, but I know part of it will go towards house renovations and I’ll probably save the rest.

5.What do you think of LottoStar and your overall experience?

It has been good. I have won before, but it wasn’t as big as this. I used those winnings to bet again. I lost it all. The second time when I won I told myself I’m going to be smart about this.

6.Did you ever think you would win the lottery one day?

Definitely not, the chances of me winning a prize or anything doesn’t work. I have very bad luck. Anything that I want I don’t get but anything that I don’t want, I get. This was a shock

 How Lucky Can You Get? competition with 

 have donated R50,000 to help Reece and his family. For the past six years, Reece from Benoni, has been fighting a brave battle. At the age of 10, he was diagnosed with a very rare disease called Gorlin Goltz Syndrome, for which there is no known cure in South Africa. Reece is one of only three known cases in South Africa and his is the worst.

Reece’s condition is also known as Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome and is completely multi system. It has affected many of his body parts, tumours have formed mostly in his jaw. Over 40 tumours have had to be removed from his body. He also suffers from other auto immune diseases and conditions that increase the risk of him developing various cancerous and non-cancerous tumours.

Due to Reece’s deteriorating health, his mom has become his constant caregiver for the past three years. His dad is the only employed parent, having to pay for their medical aid and the hospital bills. However, the family is struggling to keep up with all the expensive medical bills and they have fallen into arrears of R39,000.

The electricity in their home has been cut, they must use a generator to keep Reece’s oxygen machine running at night. Reece is unable to survive a single night without his oxygen.

Reece hasn’t lost any of his fighting spirit. He is adamant to finish matric and become a game ranger. His dire condition has made it difficult for him to attend school for a few years but thanks to a tutor and his hard work, he has been able to catch up and is working on completing grade 10 this year. He is right on schedule.

Thanks to LottoStar’s How Lucky Can You Get? competition with Jacaranda FM, we have donated R50,000 to Reece and his family to help settle outstanding medical bills, pay for more CTs, X-rays and MRIs. The funds will also help pay for his major reconstructive surgery towards the end of the year to rebuild his jaw and sinuses.

Kerry McNamara from Pretoria received a donation of R18,000 from 

 so that she can finally receive joint replacement surgery on four fingers in her left hand. The donation forms part of the contributions from LottoStar’s How Lucky Can You Get? competition with 

From the age of 17, Kerry was diagnosed with debilitating rheumatoid arthritis. She also suffers from osteoporosis. The swelling in her joints caused her to experience limb deformities which made it impossible for her to use her hands.

The original request to Good Morning Angels came from an angel named, Dr Helene Basson, from 

. In her request she states that before Kerry’s illness progressed, she used to work in the restaurant business – Kerry loves cooking and baking.

Since her diagnosis, Kerry is currently unemployed and receives a disability grant.

Kerry’s main hope after she receives her joint replacement surgery is to design gadgets for people with rheumatoid arthritis and other medical challenges. She would also like to be able to hold a dumbbell and do weight training.

Thanks to LottoStar and Operation Healing Hands, Kerry will receive joint replacement surgery which is scheduled for the 30th of June 2021 at Cure Day Hospital Erasmus. Kerry is excited and looks forward to finally being able to use her hands to do what she loves.

The R18,000 donation from Lottostar will be covering the costs of theatre time and consumable needed.

Good Morning Angels is a feature on Jacaranda FM’s Breakfast Show with Martin Bester that is centred around helping the less fortunate and restoring hope to many. Listeners nominate people in need in their communities by writing to GMA, who connects the nominated parties with the relevant sponsors or funders to assist.


Previously, we’ve collaborated with GMA for various charity initiatives with the quest to change the lives of many. Some of the recent charity causes that LottoStar contributed to through GMA are –

Part 2 | How Lucky Can You Get?

“There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to help others without expecting anything in return,” – Nelson Mandela.

This quote proves to be true for a group of selfless doctors and other medical professionals who founded Operation Healing Hands (OHH) with the hope of giving back to the community in commemoration of Nelson Mandela Day.

Operation Healing Hands is one of the selected charities in LottoStar’s 

 competition with Jacaranda FM, running between 14 June and 2 July 2021.


OHH is a non-profit organisation that was founded by a group of doctors and medical professionals with the aim of relieving pressure from government hospitals by providing free surgeries and post-operative care to the underprivileged. The organisation’s aim is to close the socioeconomic gap of patients that need life-changing surgeries in the private and public healthcare sectors.

Patients are provided with free surgeries and medical care through donations that the organisation receive. OHH also covers the medical expenses and services on behalf of patients.

These life-changing surgeries restore hope and give patients an improved quality of life so that they can get back to enjoying life, return to work and contribute to the economy once more.

Expenses covered by OHH on behalf of patients:

Consultations and pre-operative procedures

Surgeries (e.g. orthopaedics, otolaryngology, plastic and general surgery, ophthalmology, urology and dentistry)

In-hospital treatments, X-rays, and medication

Post-operative follow-up, medication, and treatment for a three-month period

Post-operative rehabilitation, including physiotherapy or prosthetics, if required

Medical professionals involved volunteer their services while the private hospitals sponsor most of the theatre time and other medical processes required.

Other medical companies sponsor prostheses like hip and knee and other implants required at no cost to the patients.
