France could be dubbed as the land of the luck – a Frenchman from Brittany has come forth to claim his €17 million 

 winnings, which is just over R372 million in South Africa. He discovered that he had won the €17 million windfall on the 20th of March 2020, however, he could not claim his prize due to lockdown restrictions.

The Frenchman kept his lucky winning ticket safe in his phone cover for two months until lockdown restrictions were eased and he could claim his prize from the lottery operator La Française des Jeux (FDJ). According to the FDJ, “the ticket was in excellent condition, folded in half. Our winner was very careful. He wrapped it in a small white paper to protect it well.” The anonymous winner has already bought a car with his winnings and intends on making his health a priority following his big win. “I'm going to take care of myself, get my health back because I've always worked a lot”, said the winner.

On the 15th of May, one week before the €17 million winner came forth to claim his prize, a second lucky Frenchman struck it big in the Euro Millions lottery. The winner bagged a massive €72 million in the Euro Millions draw, which is over R1,3 Billion in South Africa. This was the highest jackpot to be seen on the draw since February. The winner has not yet claimed their prize, their winning numbers were as follows: 11 - 23 - 32 - 34 - 39 with stars 1 and 6.

France has now had 106 EuroMillions jackpot winners since 2004, which is one of the highest amounts for EuroMillions winners in the last 16 years. The United Kingdom and Spain are amongst the list of countries with the most EuroMillions winners to date.

Our healthcare workers continue their fight to save many lives. However, they are now faced with the challenge of shortages of surgical masks to protect themselves from getting infected by Covid-19. To date, over 500 South African healthcare workers are reported to have tested positive for Covid-19, 26 hospitalised and sadly, two have succumbed to the virus according to the report by the Health Minister.

LottoStar acknowledges the fight and challenges that health care workers across the country face each day, therefore, we have joined hands with 

 to sponsor and equip health care workers with 50,000 CE certified 3-ply surgical masks – N95 or PP2E masks.

Over the last two weeks, the LottoStar and Kfm #WeAreFamily initiative have contributed a share of R500 000 to 50 different families and households in the Western Cape. We hope that this small gesture can a long way in helping many these families who have been left in dire circumstances to the national lockdown.

These are the recipients of R10 000, each in our #WeAreFamily initiative:

Samantha was set to start a new job but it had to be put on hold as the lockdown came into place. She is a single parent to two teenage boys, her family has had no food for two weeks now and to make matters worse her landlord sent her the first a letter of demand followed by an eviction notice. Samantha fears that her family will be starving and homeless soon and is in desperate need of financial assistance. Thanks to Samantha for sharing her story, she will receive R10 000.

Monique Blanckenberg nominated Willem and he will receive R10 000. Willem is a pensioner and the sole bread winner in his household, he has two grandchildren and a daughter who is unemployed. Monique tries her best to support both her home and Willem’s household with what she can provide from her cupboard and freezer. Often, Monique makes one big pot of food to share between her and Willem’s family.

Des-Rae is a single mother to two children, they live in an emergency housing establishment and are awaiting access to an RDP home. She worked as a teacher’s assistant for three days a week until the lockdown began. Now Des-Rae is waiting and hoping for the schools to reopen. She tries to support her neighbour, who is coincidentally her mother and brother. However, supporting two households on the bare minimum is tough. Thanks to Des-Rae for sharing her story, she will receive R10 000.

Micaelynn is currently supporting her entire household as her husband is unemployed. The couple have a baby and Micaelynn is a learner at a Netcare hospital but she is currently on leave. Her salary is just enough to pay their rent and they live on a property in the back yard of someone’s home. After she has paid all their expenses, the couple are left with just R500 which they put towards buying essentials for their baby. Micaelynn’s family are in dire circumstances and do not know where their next meal will come from. Thanks to Micaelynn for sharing her story, she will receive R10 000.

Carlo and his girlfriend are both unemployed, they have two children of their own and two children from Carlo’s niece who passed away during the first week of the national lockdown. His family have no food or money and are basically surviving off donations from their neighbours. Thanks to Carlo for sharing his story, him and his family will receive a R10 000 helping hand.

Part 10 | LottoStar and Kfm #WeAreFamily 

Family is the support you will never have to pay for because come rain or shine, they will be there to cheer you on every of your life goals

’. With this saying, LottoStar and Kfm are proud to offer help and support to ‘our’ families in the Western Cape. Although we might not have known each of the nominated families before, but your stories have touched our hearts and will forever remain with us forever because #WeAreFamily. Therefore, just as families support and care for one another, we stretched out our hands to support and assist ‘our’ families below by offering them a share of R500 000 to assist with their needs and essentials through this difficult time.

Jesmine reached out to us because she’s facing a very difficult situation at home. She’s struggling to provide food and essentials for her 2 children, with the youngest being 1 year old and requires baby food, formula and nappies. Her husband is not receiving an income due the lockdown and Jesmine receives only 65 percent of her salary. We’ve sent Jesmine R10 000 to assist and support her family during this difficult time.

Glenda has been going through a tough time even before the lockdown commenced. She lost her son’s father in the past year and a week later, she got retrenched. As a single mother, she’s been fighting to get herself back on her feet again, but she feels like she’s fighting a losing battle. She couldn’t afford to buy a birthday gift for her son on his birthday and other stuff he needs for school. Glenda’s friend, Juanita Goldie, reached out to us explaining how Glenda is close to losing everything she has and in need of help. We listened and sent Glenda R10 000 to assist with her needs.

Thanks to Elton for sharing his story, he will receive R10 000. Elton is married with three children and unfortunately, prior to the lockdown, he was retrenched from his job. Elton and his family live in a one-bedroom, one-bathroom spare room. Elton and his wife were only able to pay for their rent for the month and buy some food. However, by the second week of the lockdown, the family had no food or money left over. The family have been living off vetkoek and water ever since. Due to social distancing, the family are not able to receive donations from their family members or neighbours.

Dawn and her husband are nominated by Abongile Sigqolana, because of the hardships they are facing during the lockdown. With a bond, water and electricity to pay, both Dawn and her husband are struggling as they have no income. Dawn runs a daycare centre and her husband does piece jobs for a living. Their daughter, Robyn, also lost her job in December. We’ve sent R10 000 to the Whitakers to help during this trying time.

Henrietta is described by her friend and the one who nominated her, Leanne Van Loggerenberg, as a very humble woman with a special heart. Henrietta works as a domestic worker and her husband in the construction industry but they are both badly affected by the lockdown as they are unable to work or earn salaries to sustain their household. With 3 adults and 6 children in their household, they are battling to put food on the table and can’t afford basic essentials. We’ve sent the Jonathan family R10 000 to help and support them during such a time.

Part 9 | LottoStar and Kfm #WeAreFamily

LottoStar and Kfm continue their journey of giving support to struggling families and households across the Western Cape by offering them a share of R500 000 during the national lockdown. These are the stories of the nominated families and recipients of today’s offering.

Monica & Rion are an elderly couple who, like many others fell on hard times many years ago, and circumstances forced them to move in with their daughter and son-in-law. They refused to allow themselves to wallow in self-pity and they opened a little stall at their local Root 44 market selling sunglasses - they pride themselves on their honesty and integrity and always go the extra mile for their customers, oﬀering good value for money in a very competitive market. Over the last three years they have built their little business up to a point where they could ﬁnally aﬀord to move out and into their own apartment - they loved their independence and took great pride in being self-suﬃcient once again and then came Covid-19 and the market was forced to shut down even before the official lockdown. This eﬀectively destroyed any chance they have of earning an income. Monica suffers from severe asthma and Rion has diabetes, which puts both of them in the high-risk category, which of course adds to their stress levels. Thanks to Charmaine Byron’s nomination, Monica and Rion will receive a R10 000 helping hand.

Marshaline Du Toit nominated her grandmother, Emma who will receive R10 000. Ever since Marshaline’s mother passed away in 2016, her grandmother, Emma has looked after their family. Emma plays the role of mother, father and grandmother, to Marshaline and her three siblings. Emma works as a domestic worker and she receives a grant for the children, she uses her salary and the social grant to pay for school fees, food and other expenses as Marshaline has been struggling to find employment. The family currently have limited essentials as they had not planned for the extension of lockdown.

Prior to the lockdown, San-Marie was in hospital for a week with her three-year-old daughter who had very bad pneumonia. San-Marie began a new job on the 2nd of March after being unemployed for eight months. As she was only in her probation period when her daughter fell ill, San-Marie’s employer did not pay her while she cared for her daughter in hospital. San-Marie’s daughter could not go back to school as her lungs and immune system was not strong enough. She is a single mother and had no choice but to stay at home in order to take care of her daughter which she had to take unpaid leave for. San-Marie did not have any money to buy essential before the lockdown and she was I placed on temporary lay-oﬀ at work because of the lockdown. She now has no income during the lockdown, she used to sell the clothes in her my cupboard to buy her daughter food, but she cannot sell anything now because of the lockdown. On the 29th of March it was her daughter’s 3rd Birthday, San-Marie could not afford to buy her anything, not even a cake, this left her feeling heartbroken. Thanks to San-Marie for sharing her story, she will receive R10 000.

Simone faces the uncertainty of what the future holds for her. She’s not sure if she will receive her full salary this month. Her boyfriend got retrenched before the lockdown. She has a daughter and expecting another one soon. She’s struggling with her expenses that include her car’s monthly instalment and with her due date moved from June to May, she doesn’t have enough to afford stuff for the baby. Simone’s sister, Shenell Baker reached out to us for assistance. We’ve sent Simone R10 000 to help through this difficult time.

Beulah is described by her daughter, Quainita Jacobs, as a caregiver and strong spirited. She lost her husband to Alzheimer’s and Dementia on the 6th of April. She looks after her 2 children, with the eldest suffering from a mental disability and needs extra care and attention. Beulah is unemployed and her only source of income is her children’s social grants. We’ve sent Beulah R10 000 to assist and support her during these struggling times.

Part 8 | LottoStar and Kfm #WeAreFamily

As South Africans continue to brave the harsh realities of the National lockdown, the circumstances for many families become more dire, each day. Many households have no source of income and cannot afford to buy food and other essentials during this difficult time. LottoStar and Kfm understand how difficult this time is for so many families and are doing all we can to provide some relief and assistance through our #WeAreFamily initiative.

These are the Five recipients of R10 000, each in part 6 of #WeAreFamily:

Abram is an Uber driver and father of five children, him and his wife are both not working during the lockdown. Abram cannot earn an income as his clutch plate gave in and he does not have the money to replace it. Abram and his wife need to provide for their family and are in desperate need of financial assistance. Thanks to Abram for sharing his story, he will receive R10 000.

Naomi is the only one that works in a household of 7. However, with the lockdown in place, she will not be working or earning an income. She takes care of her sick husband. He was recently discharged from hospital after a major operation. Naomi’s daughter and her 4 children are also staying with them and she must provide for them too because her daughter is not working at the moment. Naomi’s story was shared by her friend, Percival Boezak. We gave Naomi R10 000 to assist during this challenging time.

Shanice was nominated by her employer, Gavin Udeman and will receive R10 000. Shanice works in a diner owned by Gavin, who was only able to pay his employees’ salaries in the first stage of the lockdown. Unfortunately, he could not afford to pay his staff after the extension of the lockdown as he lives off his bond. Shanice is twenty years old and lives in a house with; her mom, her grandparents, her uncle and his girlfriend and her little brother and her best friend, Jody. Shanice supports their entire household as her grandparents are too old to work, her brother too young to work, her best friend is pregnant, and her mother is also out of work during lockdown.

Megan and her fiancé, Alex were nominated by their friend, Joanne Martens and will receive R10 000. Megan and Alex have a two-year-old daughter. Sadly, Megan suffered a spinal injury and has a speech disability which makes it difficult for her to find a job. The family live off her sassa grant as Alex has not had job since January as the garden company he worked for closed. Ever since, Alex collects second-hand appliances and sells them to make a living, however, due to the lockdown he has is no source of income. The couple are in an extremely difficult situation as they cannot afford to pay their rent or buy food.

Reagan, his fiancé and his children are in desperate need of financial assistance. Reagan was recently retrenched a month before lockdown, he started a Fruit & Veg stall to help his fiancé pay the rent and creche fees and to assist the elderly in their community so that they don’t have to walk long distances to purchase fruits and vegetables. Since the lockdown, Reagan and his fiancé do not have money to pay their rent and their children’s creche fees for the month. Reagan needs to support his family but has no income due to the lockdown. Thanks to Reagan for sharing his story, him and his family will receive a R10 000 helping hand.

Part 6 | LottoStar and Kfm #WeAreFamily 

It’s post-Freedom Day but for these families and households, the shackles of poverty are still binding them. With the lockdown in place, the poverty line keeps on getting higher and higher. Loss of jobs and incomes have forced these families to live in extreme poverty as they can’t even afford basic needs and essentials. This propelled us and our friends at 

, to offer a share of R500 000 towards 50 struggling families in the Western Cape because #WeAreFamily and would like to offer our support to those in need.

Natalie nominated herself to be one of the #WeAreFamily R10 000 recipients. She’s faced a string of bad luck and has been forced to deal with life’s many adversities. Natalie got scammed of her provident fund money after leaving her long-standing job by a so-called builder. She wanted to build a home for herself and her daughter but was left homeless and penniless by a scammer. When she tried to get back on her feet again, she lost her job before the national lockdown commenced. Natalie and her daughter rely on her father, who’s a pensioner, for school fees and other expenses. We’ve sent R10 000 to Natalie and her family.

Ayesha resigned from her job last year to take care of her sickly mother. She also has 4 children and her sister’s 5 children to look after. Her husband is the sole breadwinner but cannot work during the lockdown and therefore would not be able to receive a salary. Her sister is on drugs and lives on the streets. Their house burned down last year and are now living in a tiny Wendy house on someone’s property. We’ve sent Ayesha and her family R10 000 to assist during this difficult time.

Gaynore relies on her faith to get through this dark period. She is a single mother suffering from a chronic chest problem and one weak lung. She fears that she might contract the virus because of her health issues. She has 2 children, one of them is in varsity and needs a computer to be able to attend his online studies but Gaynore is unable to afford one. She feels helpless at the moment as she’s unable to provide for her children after turning everywhere looking for assistance. We’ve sent Gaynore R10 000 to assist her through this extremely difficult situation.

Christelle and her husband can’t work during the lockdown and are unable to claim from the UIF. They have a 10-month-old son and 6-year-old daughter to provide and care for. It’s an extremely difficult time for the family as they now have to rely on Christelle’s grandmother to assist them from her little government pension. We’ve sent R10 000 to Christelle and her family.

Johan and his wife are struggling to provide food and essentials for their 4 children and Johan’s cousin, whom they took in. They have no income due to the lockdown and rely on their family members for essentials like food and electricity. They can’t afford rent. Johan’s children have to share 1 loaf of bread a day. Johan’s sister-in-law, Cindy Callanan, reached out to us for assistance. We’ve sent R10 000 to Johan and his family to help and support them during this difficult time.

Part 7 | LottoStar and Kfm #WeAreFamily

We are in week 5 of the national lockdown and things have been getting worse for families and households with little to no income. How do we keep afloat? Who do we turn to? What will fate hold for us all? These are the many questions and fears that families and households are battling with, however, we are here to offer a helping hand and a share of R500 000 to 50 families in the Western Cape because #WeAreFamily.

Shané and her husband are struggling to keep their heads above water because of the lockdown. They have two children to provide for, but both are not able to earn salaries during this period. Coming from a shelter in less than a month before the lockdown, they moved into an empty house with just the clothes on their back. They struggled to get a bed and a small stove. They don’t know where their rent or next meal will come from in times such as these. We have sent Shané R10 000 and an additional R9 000 which will go towards 6 months of rent.

Gillian, a single mother of 3 and a teacher at a primary school is at her wit's end now as she can’t earn an income during the lockdown. She only gets her salary when school fees are paid through the governing board at the school. With no income, her bills are piling up and she does not have enough food to get through this period. We have sent R10 000 to Gillian to assist during this challenging period in her life.

For Shaun, his wife and their four children, dark clouds appeared as early as last year October when his wife lost her job. He was the sole breadwinner until January when his wife got another job but unfortunately for Shaun, his employment ended. Three months into her employment, the lockdown hit, and Shaun’s wife struggles to provide food, basic needs and pay bills from the little salary she earns. Shaun’s mother-in-law, Shirley George, reached out to us to nominate them. We have sent R10 000 to Shaun and his family.

Elizabeth and her husband are going through a difficult period as they don’t have any income during the lockdown. Elizabeth runs a soup kitchen and her husband has a part-time job so that there’s food on the table, however, this has ended due to the lockdown. They are currently starving and have no food to eat. We have sent Elizabeth and her husband R10 000 after being nominated by their son-in-law, Wilbur Maritz.

Marchelle was nominated by her son, Brent Philander, who describes her as a woman with a big heart and always willing to lend a helping hand to those who need it. She opened her home to help her daughter, son-in-law and their two children and sister-in-law who is currently pregnant. Marchelle, supports the whole family and household with her factory work salary. Her son-in-law works as a casual worker. We have sent Marchelle R10 000 to assist with all her necessities.

When you received one of 120 Golden Tickets - what was it like knowing you had a shot at R1 Million?


When I saw the Golden Ticket in my emails, I was quite sceptical. But once I got the call confirming all the details, it sank in that I could be a millionaire.


What was racing through your mind during each nerve-wracking round?


It was all a blur of nerves and excitement. The moment I got the gold sticker in the vinyl, it clicked that I made it to the final round.


When you made it to the final three and chose the first turntable, how did you trust your instincts?


I just trusted my gut. Something told me that the middle turntable was the one. I just had a feeling that was the one to unlock my win.
